Foreign Ministry sets up Steering Committee on overseas citizen protection

The Foreign Ministry on Friday announced the establishment of its Steering Committee for the protection of Vietnamese citizens abroad.

The Committee debuted amid increasingly complicated and unpredictable developments such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Vietnamese citizens tricked into working abroad, forced labour, and the handling of Vietnamese fishermen and fishing vessels by other countries.

It is responsible for studying guidelines and policies regarding citizen protection and offering advice to the Government and the Foreign Ministry.

A number of important issues were discussed at the Committee’s first meeting the same day, including plans to protect Vietnamese citizens and legal entities as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalates.

6,000 Vietnamese nationals affected by the conflict have been brought back to Vietnam or safely evacuated to a third country.
