Indonesia surpasses India to emerge as Asia’s Covid hotspot

(VOVWORLD) – Indonesia is fighting a devastating Covid-19 outbreak fuelled by the Delta variant.

The country is reporting over 40,000 cases daily while in India the number has dropped to more than 32,000 cases. More worryingly, Indonesia’s population is only one-fifth of India’s, but the rate of Covid-19 infections is more than double.

On July 7, Indonesia expanded nationwide curbs to battle its deadliest Covid-19 wave. Health experts have urged the government to tighten travel restriction and improve trace and testing capacity.

As of Tuesday, the total caseload in Indonesia reached more than 2.6 million and more than 68,200 deaths were reported.
