Israel closes West Bank and Gaza Strip during major Jewish celebrations

Israel Defense Forces announced the closure of crossings with the West Bank and Gaza Strip on Tuesday, during the upcoming Jewish holidays.

Exceptions to the closures will be made for humanitarian and other outstanding cases, but will require the approval of the Defense Ministry’s liaison to the Palestinians, known as the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories.

The military says such closures are a preventative measure against attacks in periods of increased tension following a series of attacks on Israelis since March.

On September 5 the Israeli military said that six Israeli soldiers and one civilian were injured when gunmen opened fire on a bus in the West Bank.
