Japan announces results of its investigation of Abe’s assassination

The National Police Agency of Japan on Thursday announced the results of its investigation after former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated on July 8.

It said errors were made in handling the situation and in developing a plan to ensure the security of an important person attending an event on the street.

On Friday, the agency issued its “New Security Guidelines” to help local police forces develop security plans. New solutions were proposed to increase security in specific scenarios. To meet the need for tighter security, the agency will expand its organizational structure by creating a new specialized security unit by the end of this year. The agency will also increase the number of security staff received from local police departments to 20 per year to provide a specialized security force for important events.
