King Minh Mang’s golden seal to be repatriated

Vietnam has successfully negotiated the repatriation of King Minh Mang’s golden seal cast in 1823, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said on Monday. The Ministry said it will coordinate with France’s Millon Auction House and relevant agencies to bring the seal back to the country as soon as possible, abiding by the legal regulations of the two countries.

Earlier, a delegation led by Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong traveled to France to hold talks with Millon Auction House and Millon twice rescheduled the auction, which had originally offered to sell the royal seal for 2-3 million euros.

The seal was named “Hoang De Chi Bao” (Treasure of the Emperor). Cast in pure gold in the 4th year of reign Minh Mang (1823), weighing 10.78 kg, this is the largest and most beautiful seal from the Nguyen Dynasty, used only for the most important ordinations and documents.
