New period in Vietnam-Japan defense cooperation

Vietnamese Defense Minister Phan Van Giang and Japanese Defense Minister Kishi Nobuo held talks in Hanoi on Saturday after a welcome ceremony. The two Ministers reviewed the development of bilateral defense ties and situation in the region and the world. They reiterated the importance of complying with international law including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and shared the two armies’ experience in the fight against COVID-19.

The two Ministers discussed ways to enhance bilateral defense cooperation which has entered a new period. They agreed to direct relevant agencies to work closely on the Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral cooperation on military medicine and cyber security, increase high-ranking delegation exchanges, and strengthen bilateral cooperative mechanisms. In the new period of bilateral defense cooperation, the two sides will further cooperation activities to contribute to peace stability, and development in the region and the world.

After the talks, the two Defense Ministers witnessed the signing of an agreement on transfers of defense equipment and technology between Vietnam and Japan.
