Philippines’ President announces retirement from politics

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Saturday he will no longer seek the vice presidency in next year’s election and will retire from politics, meaning he will not race for any posts. His presidency will terminate in June, 2022.

The overwhelming sentiment of the Filipinos is that he is not qualified, and it would be a violation of the constitution to circumvent the law if he runs for the vice presidency. But he didn’t give details on when he will retire.

Each Filipino President is constitutionally limited to a single six-year term. Mr. Duterte hasn’t named the one that gets his support as his next successor.
