Russia will terminate its membership on the UN Human Rights Council early, Russia’s deputy UN Ambassador Gennady Kuzmin said Thursday.

Kuzmin said Russia will continue to fulfill its international obligations in the field of human rights after leaving the Council.

He noted that Russia considers the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on Thursday in New York to suspend the membership of Russian on the Council an illegitimate and politically motivated step.

The vote on the resolution was 93 in favor, 24 against, with 58 countries abstaining.
