US bans Chinese Huawei, ZTE equipment sales, citing national security risk

The US has banned approvals of new telecommunications equipment from China’s Huawei Technologies and ZTE, citing their “unacceptable risk” to US national security. Also banned by the US on Friday were Chinese surveillance equipment maker Dahua, video surveillance firm Hikvision, and telecoms firm Hytera Communications.

The move represents Washington’s latest crackdown on the Chinese tech giants amid fears that they could be used to spy on Americans.

Hikvision responded to the ban saying its products do not threaten U.S. security, adding that it will continue to serve US customers in compliance with US regulations.

These decisions came after a March 2021 designation of the Chinese companies as posing a threat to national security under a 2019 law aimed at protecting US communications networks.
