US House passes gun-safety legislation

The US House of Representatives on Friday passed significant gun-safety legislation, the strongest gun violence prevention law in the last 30 years, sending it to President Joe Biden to sign, a day after a Supreme Court ruling that broadly expanded gun rights. House action followed a late Thursday Senate vote of 65-33 to pass the bill.

The “Bipartisan Safer Communities Act” is an 80-page document that includes millions of dollars in spending on mental health, school safety, crisis intervention programs, and incentives for states to include juvenile records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

The bill also makes significant changes to gun purchases for those between the ages of 18 and 21.
