Vietnam Fisheries Society protests China’s unilateral fishing ban in East Sea

– The Vietnam Fisheries Society has protested China’s newly-issued ban on fishing, effective for 3 months from May 1, in part of the Gulf of Tonkin waters and Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago in the East Sea (South China Sea). China’s unilateral, repetitive and unreasonable action seriously infringes on Vietnam’s sovereignty and violates Vietnam’s other rights and interests in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone, the Society said, adding it violates international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and runs counter to the Declaration on the Conduct of parties in the East Sea.

The Vietnam Fisheries Society said China’s fishing ban is null and void in waters under Vietnam’s sovereignty and requested China to immediately end this unreasonable action.
