Kishida elected next Japanese PM

Fumio Kishida, leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was elected on Monday as the country’s new prime minister to succeed Yoshihide Suga. Mr. Kishida received 311 of 458 votes in the House of Representatives.

After naming his new Cabinet in the afternoon, Kishida will formally deliver a policy speech on Friday and take questions from representatives of ruling and opposition parties.

He may then dissolve the House of Representatives on October 14, the end of the current extraordinary session of the Parliament, to hold a general election before the deadline on October 31.
