Mexico won’t sever diplomatic ties with Spain, says President Obrador

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday said Mexico does not plan to sever diplomatic ties with Spain or summon its ambassador to Madrid. The statement was made at a press conference one day after he suggested  “pausing” diplomatic relations with Spain.

He has repeatedly accused Spanish companies of taking advantage of Mexico, particularly in the energy sector.

The Mexican president said there had been “economic promiscuity” between Mexico and Spain during a run of previous governments in which Mexico was “ransacked.”

Spain’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the remarks, saying Spain did nothing to trigger Obrador’s statements.
