Russia backs ASEAN plan on tackling Myanmar crisis

Russia strongly supports the Southeast Asian diplomatic effort to end the crisis in Myanmar and has conveyed similar messages to the country’s military leadership, its foreign minister said on Tuesday. The five-point consensus agreed by ASEAN should be the basis by which the situation can be resolved, Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a visit to Jakarta.

Mr. Lavrov will hold virtual talks with his ASEAN counterparts during the visit, according to Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

At a meeting in Jakarta in late April, ASEAN leaders agreed on five points on the Myanmar situation: ending violence, conducting constructive dialogue among all parties, appointing a special ASEAN envoy to facilitate the dialogue, providing humanitarian assistance for Myanmar’s people.
