Showrooms for local OCOP products opened in Dong Da and Hoan Kiem districts

– Hanoi’s Department of Industry and Trade in collaboration with the People’s Committees of Dong Da and Hoan Kiem district launched showrooms for the display and sale of product under the One Commune, One Product (OCOP) program at the Mien Xanh clean food store at No. 141 O Cho Dua, Dong Da district, and at Dong Xuan market, Dong Xuan ward, Hoan Kiem district on November 16.  According to Acting Director of the municipal Department of Industry and Trade Tran Thi  Phuong Lan,  the OCOP program aims to increase production values, build the trademark for agricultural products and promote consumption and trading connection for goods.

So far, Hanoi has been the leading locality in implementing the OCOP program. The city has had a total of 1,054 OCOP products receiving at least three-star ratings produced by 255 firms, cooperatives and household businesses.

The city’s government tasked the municipal Department of Industry and Trade with cooperating with districts and townships to survey and select locations for showcasing and selling local OCOP products.

To date, 35 showrooms of OCOP products have been opened, helping to promote trade promotion and consumption of OCOP products of Hanoi and other localities in the capital city.

Dong Da district selected the Mien Xanh clean food to be displayed at the showroom  which  sells local OCOP products and regional specialties of other localities, such as Ha Giang, Quang Ninh and Hung Yen, among others.

Meanwhile, Hoan Kiem district is operating two OCOP showrooms, one at the boundary  between Cau Dong street and Dong Xuan market, and another at the center of Dong Xuan market.

Lan said that in the coming time, her agency would work with the authorities of districts and townships to open more OCOP showrooms of OCOP in the city, while coordinating with other localities to support stakeholders in the production, sale and marketing of OCOP products.

The OCOP was initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2008, based on Japan’s “One Village, One Product” and Thailand’s “One Town, One Product” programs. It is an economic development program for rural areas and focuses on increasing internal  strength  and values, and is aimed at accelerating  the national target program on new-style rural area building.

The classifications of goods and services defined in the program include food (fresh and processed farm produce); beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic); medicinal herbs (products made from herbal plants); fabric and textiles (products made from cotton and yarn); souvenirs, furniture, and decorations (products made from wood, fibres, rattan, metal, and ceramics); and rural tourism services and sales (services for sightseeing, tourism, study, and research).

The overall objective of the program is to develop stable and sustainable forms of production for organizations and businesses, with priority given to developing cooperatives and small- and medium-sized enterprises, towards producing traditional products and improving services with high competitiveness on the domestic and international markets, thus promoting the rural economy and national agriculture industrialization and modernization.
