UK praises Vietnam’s expanding role globally

(VOVWORLD) – UK Secretary of State for Defense Robert Ben Lobban Wallace on Thursday lauded Vietnam’s expanding role in the region and globally, exemplified by its contributions to UN peacekeeping operations.

At a dialogue with students of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Mr. Wallace said that a strategy tilting towards the Indo-Pacific announced last March affirms the UK’s long-term commitment to peace and stability in the region. Maritime security in the region is a shared concern of the international community because it affects regional peace, stability, and the rule of law, he said.

The UK wishes to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN countries in promoting dialogues, peace, and stability, he noted, pointing out that, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the UK has a duty to protect the rules-based international order.

Secretary Wallace said the UK and Vietnam share many strategic visions and interests, including views on free trade and the importance of international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS. He promised that the UK will continue to work closely with Vietnam to boost their strategic partnership.
