Vietnam approves 5 COVID-19 vaccines, homegrown COVIVAC completes phase 1 of trial

The Ministry of Health has granted conditional approval for COVID-19 vaccine Moderna (also known as Spikevax) for emergency use in Vietnam. A total of 5 COVID-19 vaccines have so far been approved by the Ministry of Health: AstraZeneca, Sputnik V, Sinopharm’s Vero-Cell, Pfizer, and Moderna. Regarding the homegrown COVID-19 vaccine, the Ministry of Health said that the COVIVAC vaccine has completed phase 1 of clinical trial and produced immunity. The vaccine sample has been sent to Canada for an independent agency to evaluate its immunogenicity.

COVIVAC vaccine developed by Nha Trang Vaccine and Biological Products Company (IVAC) is being tested by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in collaboration with Hanoi Medical University. COVIVAC is the second COVID-19 vaccine in Vietnam licensed for human testing. Nanocovax, Vietnam’s first vaccine candidate, now is in the final phase of clinical trials conducted on 13,000 people.
