France’s Macron calls for talk with Assad to build peace in Syria

(VOVWORLD) -French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday said he believes it will be necessary to work with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and his representatives to end the civil war and bring stability of the country.

Macron said during an interview with state-run France2 television that his stance has changed. He predicted that the war against the Islamic State in Syria will soon be over.

France joined the US-led military coalition to combat Islamic State insurgents in Syria in September, 2015. Macron said he expects the international military offensive will reach its goal of liberating Syrian territories from the terrorist group by the end of February.

The Syrian conflict, which began with peaceful protests in 2011, has claimed more than 340,000 lives and displaced millions, triggering Europe's worst migration crisis ever.
