French President elect commits to defending Paris climate deal

President-elect Emmanuel Macron told his US counterpart Donald Trump in a telephone call on Monday that he would defend a climate change deal agreed in Paris in 2015.

Macron said the deal is so important and sensitive to France. The two leaders also discussed the fight against terrorism, transatlantic relations and the economy. They agreed to meet in Brussels on May 25 on the sidelines of the NATO summit.

The same day, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan congratulated President-elect Emmanuel Macron, saying his victory will signal hope for the EU's future. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi sent a congratulatory letter to Macron and stressed cooperation in the fight against the Islamic State.
