Germany, France, Spain, Italy call for a multi-speed Europe

Leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Spain on Monday voiced their support for a multi-speed Europe, which allows member states to advance at their own pace and at different levels of integration.

French President Francois Hollande told an informal summit in Versailles, southwest Paris, that unity is not uniformity, adding that some member countries of the European Union could go faster and further in areas such as defense, tax, and social harmonization.

The idea of multi-speed Europe was first mentioned by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker while releasing a White Paper on a post-Brexit EU. It is welcomed by Belgium, the Netherland, and Luxemgourg.
