Iran says three obstacles remain to nuclear deal

An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said at a press briefing on Monday that reviving the 2015 nuclear deal is possible if the US and European powers take a political decision to resolve three remaining issues.

Saeed Khatibzadeh identified the remaining outstanding issues: the extent to which sanctions will be rolled back; a guarantee that the US will not quit the pact again; and questions about uranium traces found at several old but undeclared sites in Iran.

After 10 months of talks in Vienna, progress has been made toward restoring the agreement to curb Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, which the US abandoned in 2018.

The spokesman said that a resolution of about 97% of the pending issues has been reached, but implementation of the agreement will not happen overnight.
