Japan, EU to cooperate for free and open Indo-Pacific

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and European Council President Charles Michel agreed during a phone talk on Monday to work together to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific region. During their conversation, the two leaders exchanged views on China and North Korea, and affirmed cooperation on global issues like climate change.

Michel had planned to visit Tokyo for a meeting with Kishida on Monday but was forced to cancel the trip due to surging COVID-19 infections.

The EU considers the Indo-Pacific region the world’s center of geoeconomics and geopolitics, and believes any disruption there directly affects its interests.
