National population and housing census kicks off

The General Statistics Office (GSO) began a national population and housing census on Monday to evaluate national targets and indicators of sustainable development. This is the fifth national census Vietnam has conducted in 50 years.

The census will gather general population information: birth, death, marital status, disability, occupation, academic attainment level, technological specialization, residence, migration status, and living conditions, according to GSO Head Nguyen Bich Lam.

People will be provided passwords to answer questions online. This method has been used in many countries around the world, said Lam.

The data will be gathered over the course of 25 days and preliminary results will be announced in July. The full census will be published in the second quarter of 2020.
