Record number of Afghan civilians killed

-Nearly 1,700 Afghan civilians were killed in fighting and terrorist attacks in the first half of this year, hitting a record high, the UN said on Sunday.

More than 3,400 civilians were also wounded during the period. According to a report by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), improvised explosive devices caused nearly half of all civilian casualties. Ground engagements were the second leading cause, followed by targeted and deliberate killings, aerial operations, and explosive war remnants.
