Thousands rally in Indonesia to protest new bills

Thousands of students rallied in cities across Indonesia on Tuesday to protest proposed changes to a number of laws.

These include the criminal code, the law governing the anti-corruption commission, and draft laws on land and human resources. In Jakarta, students torched vehicles and plastic road barriers in front of Parliament, local media reported, and police sprayed water cannon to disperse the protesters. Parliament had been about to pass revisions to the penal code on Tuesday, but postponed a vote on the bill at the request of President Joko Widodo.
