Vietnam marks 55 years of first air defense victory

More than 500 navy officers and veterans gathered in Ho Chi Minh city on Sunday for a ceremony to mark the 55th anniversary of the first victory by Vietnam's air and air defense forces during the bombardments staged by the US military in northern Vietnam.

Participants highlighted the historic milestone in August, 1964, when the Vietnamese naval force pushed US destroyer Maddox out of Vietnamese waters and shot down 8 US aircraft.

Rear Admiral Pham Van Quang briefed the veterans of the performance of the navy and new developments in the East Sea. He said the Vietnamese navy is closely monitoring the situation and taking all measures to prevent any potential escalations and defend peace and national sovereignty.
