White House still hopeful about US-North Korea summit

The White House is "still hopeful" the summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump will proceed despite Pyongyang's threat to cancel it, spokesperson Sarah Sanders said on Wednesday.

She said Mr. Trump is ready for the meeting to happen, and if it doesn't, the US will continue maximum pressure against North Korea.

South Korea believes Pyongyang is still committed to denuclearization despite its suspension of talks with Seoul, South Korean President's secretary Yoon Young-chan said.

China called on North Korea and the US to meet despite the North's threat to cancel, calling it the only way to reduce tension on the Korean peninsula and achieve peace and stability in the region.
