World reacts to Turkey’s strike in northeast Syria

Minutes after Turkey launched airstrikes and artillery fire against Kurdish positions in northeast Syria on Wednesday, the UN, the US, and European countries condemned the military operation.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said any military operation must respect the UN Charter and international humanitarian law. The five permanent UNSC members agreed to hold an emergency meeting on Syria on Thursday.

French Minister for European Affairs Amelie de Montchalin said France, Germany, and the UK are finalizing a joint statement that will be extremely clear on the fact that they strongly and firmly condemn the attack.

EU chief Jean-Claude Juncker demanded that Turkey halt its military operation.

US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said the Turkish government will have to pay a very big price, while US Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen said its government is working on an outline of sanctions against Turkey for unilaterally invading northeastern Syria.
