VGP – This year’s World Water Day (March 22) will be celebrated in the northern province of Bac Giang with various national activities from March 19-20.

The main activities include a photo exhibition named “Water and Sustainable Development”, a scientific seminar on the same theme and an art program marking the World Water Day. Especially, a national ceremony will be organized with the participation of Party and State officials, who will deliver important message about managing and using water resources effectively and sustainably.

Under the theme “Water and Sustainable Development”, this year’s celebration will call on the community to pay attention to the connection between sustainable development and water resources when there will be around two thirds of the world population living in critical conditions of water supy. As a result, sustainable development has become more urgent than ever, requiring a strategic and global vision with inseparable role of water resources.

Bac Giang province is selected to host the event because the province has diverse water resources and faces challenges related to water sources in socio-economic development. The province’s water is supplied by the Thuong, Cau and Luc Nam Rivers with a total 347km length. The three rivers are contaminated by industrial zones, urban areas and upstream regions. Safe water and measures to minimize the effects of polluted water sources and environment have become challenges to the province in sustainable socio-economic development.

Annually, Viet Nam and other countries organize many activities to mark the World Water Day to call on the community’s attention on water resources’ importance and policies on managing sustainably water resources, especially freshwater sources.
