WTO director general resigns

World Trade Organization (WTO) chief Roberto Azevedo on Thursday suddenly announced that he will resign in August, a year earlier than scheduled.

Mr. Azevedo, 62, took the position in 2013 and is currently in his second term as WTO Director General.

He said his decision serves the WTO’s interest, by allowing governments to focus next year’s scheduled trade ministers’ meeting on reforming the organization rather than have it consumed with the process of choosing his successor.
