Remittances sent to Vietnam estimated at 12.5 billion USD in 2021

-The remittances sent home by overseas Vietnamese in 2021 stood at 12.5 billion USD, up 10% compared to 2020, according to the State Bank’s latest data.

Ho Chi Minh City attracted more than 6.5 billion USD worth of remittances in 2021.

It is estimated that annually the amount of remittances channeled into production and businesses accounts for nearly 30% of the total and about 25% of total remittances are poured into the real estate.

Experts say remittances have contributed to an increase in the domestic foreign currency source. This means that the supply and demand for foreign currencies in the market will be relatively balanced and help the USD/VND exchange rate maintain stability.

The Netherlands helps Vietnam mitigate plastic waste pollution

Officials of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on Tuesday worked with representatives of the Dutch Embassy in Vietnam and Clear Rivers on implementing a pilot project to collect plastic waste in Hau river.

Ramon Knoester, Founding Director of Clear Rivers, said the waste collection model on the Hau River includes a Litter Trap machine that operates automatically without consuming fuel to collect plastic waste floating on the river into a bag.

Litter Trap is 5.6m long, 2.3m wide and 2.4m high, of which 1.5m is submerged in water. Clear Rivers staff will clean the traps twice a week, resulting in an estimated eight blocks of plastic waste. This amount of plastic waste will be reused sustainably in the circular economy model. In addition, the project also connects with educational institutions like Can Tho University in designing lectures and participating in communications, raising community awareness about plastic waste reduction.

Deputy Head of Mission at the Dutch Embassy in Vietnam Christoph Prommersberger said that the Netherlands has many businesses with strengths and experiences in the field of collection and treatment of floating waste in rivers and seas. He said the Netherlands hopes that through these projects, it will join hands with Vietnam to reduce environmental pollution caused by plastic waste.
